Binged: Nikita S1

This past week I binged watched the first season of the CW show Nikita. Nikita is an adaptation of the Luc Besson film Nikita (1990). It is the second adaptation of the film. The first being La Femme Nikita (1997).  Nikita aired on The CW network in 2010 and lasted until 2013. In a span of 3 years, Nikita aired 4 seasons and released a total of 73 episodes.

I had heard about Nikita because it aired on The CW during a period of time where I was constantly watching shows from that era. I watched Gossip Girl, Veronica Mars, One Tree Hill, and many more shows from the network during that time. Mind you, I didn’t watch any of those shows while they were airing instead found them on my own time. With this in mind, I have finally found Nikita almost 10 years since it’s aired and it holds up better than you would believe.

Season 1 of Nikita was a joy to watch. It was fairly easy to binge because it was so intriguing that you wouldn’t want to stop on any particular episode. I was actually surprised at how good Nikita was. With any CW show you have to go into with certain expectations. CW is a place for teen dramas for teens, and with that you can’t have the same expectations for a CW show like you can have with a HBO show. Nikita is an expectation. Nikita is almost too good to be a CW show. Sure it has it’s romantic elements, but it deals with more adult topics than the average CW show. It’s hard to believe that Nikita is as underrated and forgotten as it is. It’s one of the best CW shows and this is only based off my observation of one season. I honestly believe that if Nikita had aired on a high profile television network, it would of been taken a lot more seriously and better remembered than it actually was.

Favorite Episode: Resistance (1×06)

Synopsis: A group of terrorists attack a bus filled with Division recruits and kidnap Alex and Thom, who are both unaware that the attack is a test orchestrated by Division.

This is connected with my favorite character section. So I’ll just say this, this is the episode where my favorite character becomes…well my favorite character. Not only that, but the episode has a The Cabin in the Woods vibe to it, a movie I really enjoyed. There are plenty of other fantastic episodes in this one season, but this one takes the cake for me.

Honorable Mentions:

Rough Trade (1×04)

The Guardian (1×05)

All The Way (1×11)

Alexandra (1×15)

Betrayals (1×21)

Favorite Character: Alex

You would think a show named after it’s main character would be it’s best character. I do think Nikita herself is a great character. She was my favorite character for the first couple of episodes, but Alex is another type of great in my opinion. I really cared about her arc and excited to see her change and become the badass she could always be. I’m a sucker for character development and Alex is a character who develops like no other on the first season of Nikita.

Favorite Mission:

The group mission from Coup De Grace (1×13).

Do I Recommend It?

Yes, especially if you enjoy spy shows like Alias and movies like the James Bond franchise. Nikita reminds me a lot of Alias (2001) in particular. Now that I think about it Alias may have taken inspiration from the Nikita (1990) film. What a weird circle that is. Anyhow, I love Alias, so it’s no surprise that I find myself enjoying Nikita. Hopefully soon I will be able to find some time and finish Nikita. I would definitely recommend everyone to check it out as well.
