Favorite Albums: When My Heart Felt Volcanic – The Aces

When My Heart Felt Volcanic is the debut album of indie-pop band The Aces released on April 6, 2018. The Aces consists of four members, Katie Henderson, Cristal Ramirez, McKenna Petty, and Alisa Ramirez. When My Heart Felt Volcanic has 13 songs and a 47-minute runtime. When My Heart Felt Volcanic was a huge surprise for me when it was released in 2018. I had no idea who The Aces were only discovering them from being recommended to watch their Volcanic Love music video. They came out of nowhere and boy, was I glad to had have jumped on their bandwagon quickly.

When My Heart Felt Volcanic is one of the best debut albums I have heard in recent memory. It is amazingly well done that it doesn’t come off as a debut album at all. It feels much more like an album put together by a band that’s been together for years. They know the ins and outs of making a great album. The Aces don’t necessarily have the years of experience that several indie bands have, but what they do have is they know what their sound is. It usually takes a while for a band to really figure out what their sound is and what works best for them. That’s not the case for The Aces, they already know what they do best as a band and it shows in their music with When My Heart Felt Volcanic. It’s a crisp debut and if it’s any indication of what future albums by them may sound like, I can’t wait to hear a thousand more albums by The Aces.

Volcanic Love

  • I love that this was my first introduction to The Aces. I couldn’t get that chorus out of my head for days.
  • What grabbed my attention first about the song wasn’t the actual music, but the music video. The Aces are clearly referencing the 80s teen classic The Heathers in the music video.
  • My most played song by them according to Last.fm.

  • Stuck is The Aces’ most popular song thus far in their career, having been on an EP they released before releasing their album.
  • It’s easy to see why this is their biggest hit. It’s an undeniable earworm and it’s insanely catchy.
  • I mean how can you not love that bassline?

Fake Nice

  • Surely we all know someone who we can think of when we listen to.
  • That’s what makes Fake Nice one of The Aces’ most relatable songs.
  • “Oh you know how to win them over but not this time. And if they ask, I’ll be honest, say what’s on my mind, Oh she’s so fake nice”

Lovin’ Is Bible

  • I find this to be their most interesting lyrical song. It’s make Christianity references, but not in the way you think.
  • It’s a fun track, but the lyrics here are what I love most about it. You’ll have a blast dissecting the song.
  • “You know I’m not religious, but your lovin’ is Bible.”

Last One

  • This is the big fuck you song on the album and it is without a doubt one of it’s best.
  • The Aces in Last One are ruthlessly telling an old lover that they don’t need them anymore.
  • It’s glorious, cathartic experience in every single way.

  • I mention a few songs earlier being catchy, but none of them can compare to Stay.
  • Once you hear it you won’t be able to get it out of your head until you listen to it again.
  • “Let’s not throw it away” “You’ll be breakin’ my heart if you don’t stay.”

  • The only ballad on the album which already makes it the best ballad.
  • Still Hurricane is a true standout from the album not only because it’s the only ballad but the vocal performance the ladies give are the most memorable.
  • It is also another beautiful lyrical song.

If you haven’t checked out When My Heart Felt Volcanic in full already, I recommend (obviously). The Aces is definitely a band to be on the lookout for in the future whenever they release anything new. I know I will be one impatiently waiting for it.
