Favorite Albums: Dua Lipa – Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa is the debut album by English artist Dua Lipa released on June 2, 2017. Dua Lipa consists of 17 songs, running a total of an hour and 13 seconds. Dua Lipa produced hits like New Rules, IDGAF, and Blow Your Mind (Mwah). I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I was on board the Dua Lipa train well before the rest of the world jumped onto it. I was excited about the album before it was released and when it finally was, it was everything I wanted and more. I was even happier to see Dua Lipa blow up shortly therefore after seeing her become the star I knew she would become.

The album has a total of 17 songs and what’s great about the album is that it’s feasible that every song on the album could have been a single. Each song is great, but unique compared to the other. There’s something on the album for everyone. Dua Lipa manages to have 17 songs where they follow each other but each song has its own vibe that can satisfy all fans of the pop genre and sub-genres. It’s an incredible debut album where it displays much of Dua’s talent and the potential she has to go further in her career.

Favorites:

Begging

  • I didn’t appreciate this song enough when I first heard it. It took hearing from someone who loved the song for it to become one of my favorites.
  • It’s a song that when you hear it you want to drop everything you’re doing and sing it.
  • It’s one of the best songs on the album in terms of production.

Bad Together

  • Two damaged people, Lipa and her lover, finding each other and falling in love even though they both have issues. Reminds me of the song Issues by Julia Micheals. It’s a loaded song, but easy to sing and love.
  • Very catchy and makes for a perfect closer.
  • According to Last.fm, this is one of my most played songs from the entire album. Very easy to listen to again and again.

Hotter Than Hell

  • I believed this was the first song I had heard by Dua Lipa when the music video first came out and it was an amazing introduction to her.
  • It’s a tropical fused song making it a standout track because nothing else sounds like it on the album.
  • The song still feels fresh today, despite it being released in 2016.

Homesick

  • Homesick features uncredited guest vocals from Chris Martin frontman of Coldplay.
  • I’m a sucker for a good ballad and Dua Lipa deliveries a beautiful one in Homesick. It also has the most haunting lyrics on the album.
  • When I’m walking on water/All my dreams have come true/Still, nothing means nothing/Without you.

No Goodbyes

  • The lyrics are talking about a couple on the verge of breaking up and trying to move on with their lives.
  • It’s probably the most relatable song on the entire album. I know that many people can relate to the emotions and feelings Dua expresses in the song.
  • Why don’t we hold each other / Use each other / Whisper pretty lies?

Genesis

  • This is the best song Dua Lipa has written so far in her short career.
  • It’s a wonderful opener giving you a taste to what to expect from the album, beautiful lyrics, Dua’s striking vocals, and well matched production.
  • In the beginning, God created Heaven and Earth/ For what it’s worth, I think that he might’ve created you first. – I wish I could write something this beautiful.

Last Dance

  • Though Hotter Than Hell was the first song I had heard from Dua Lipa, her song Last Dance was what convinced me she would be a star.
  • Last Dance combines everything that Dua does well, the production, lyrics, and vocals are all top notch with a aesthetic pleasing music video.
  • I believe it’s still one of her best songs, despite not receiving enough attention in my opinion.

Though, I love Dua Lipa, if the singles from Future Nostalgia is any indication of what the rest of the album is going to be like, I think I may prefer it over her debut album. 80s disco inspired pop music has also been a favorite of mines.

Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia is out April 3, 2020.
